Malang, October 2, 2026 — The Malang Gastroenterohepatology Update 15 (MGU 15) 2026 opened its three-day program with an Advanced Workshop focused on strengthening practical skills in advanced endoscopy and pancreatobiliary intervention.

Held at Karsa Husada Hospital on Friday, October 2, 2026, the workshop carried the theme “Mastering Advanced Endoscopy: Practical Approaches to Complex Pancreatobiliary Disorders.” The program was organized as part of the broader MGU 15 2026 series by the Gastroenterology Division of the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Brawijaya–Saiful Anwar General Hospital (FKUB-RSSA), with Kusuma Enterprise entrusted with the event management and implementation.

Unlike sessions focused primarily on lectures and scientific updates, the Advanced Workshop placed greater emphasis on practical learning and hands-on experience, allowing participants to engage with advanced endoscopic procedures through a combination of lectures, case discussion, demonstrations, and supervised practice.

From Scientific Knowledge to Practical Endoscopy

The workshop began with a series of lectures covering several important areas of advanced endoscopy.

The first lecture, “Therapeutic EUS: Current Techniques and Practical Approach to EUS-Guided Drainage,” was delivered by Hasan Maulahela, MD, PhD, FACG, FASGE (Jakarta). The session was followed by “Complex Biliary Intervention: From Stone Extraction to Advanced Biliary Stenting,” presented by Prof. Thawee Ratanachu-Ek, MD, FRCST (Thailand).

The program also addressed the role of the nursing team in advanced endoscopy through “Nursing Excellence in EUS & ERCP: From Preparation to Post-Procedure Care,” delivered by Suwaporn Sorntecho and Rapeepan Paniram.

The sequence of sessions provided participants with a foundation before moving into case-based and practical activities, creating a learning flow that connected theoretical understanding with clinical application.

Case Parade Connects Discussion with Clinical Practice

Following the initial lecture sessions, participants took part in a Case Parade: EUS & ERCP, featuring Ferdinandus Stevanus Kakiay, MD (Malang) as case presenter, with Syifa Mustika, MD, PhD (Malang) serving as chairperson.

The case discussion also involved Boqi Pratomo Wibowo, MD, PhD (Malang) and Freddy, MD (Batu) as panelists.

The Case Parade provided an opportunity for participants to examine clinical cases through discussion with experienced practitioners before proceeding to the workshop's hands-on sessions.

This structure was particularly important in positioning the workshop not simply as a technical demonstration, but as a space for participants to understand the clinical considerations surrounding advanced endoscopic procedures.

Hands-on EUS and ERCP Sessions

The practical component became the central part of the afternoon program.

The first Hands-on EUS session was conducted with a faculty team consisting of Prof. Thawee Ratanachu-Ek, MD, FRCST; Hasan Maulahela, MD, PhD, FACG, FASGE; Boqi Pratomo Wibowo, MD, PhD; and Syifa Mustika, MD, PhD.

After the Friday prayer and lunch break, participants continued with an extended Hands-on EUS & ERCP session, again supported by the same faculty team.

The parallel workshop structure divided participants into groups and provided opportunities to learn directly from faculty members. In the EUS and ERCP tracks, participants were guided through practical sessions under the supervision of faculty from Indonesia and Thailand.

This hands-on approach allowed the workshop to emphasize one of the key characteristics of advanced medical education: the importance of translating knowledge into practical skills through direct guidance and experience.

Bridging Knowledge and Clinical Skills

For Syifa Mustika, MD, PhD, who served as the Course Director of the Advanced Workshop, practical learning is an important component in strengthening the connection between scientific knowledge and clinical capability.

“An advanced endoscopy workshop provides an opportunity for participants to move beyond understanding procedures conceptually and to explore how that knowledge can be applied in practice. Through hands-on learning and direct interaction with experienced faculty, participants can strengthen both their technical understanding and their clinical confidence.”

The workshop's structure supported this objective by combining lectures, case discussion, and hands-on practice within a single learning program.

The presence of international faculty also added another dimension to the learning experience. Prof. Thawee Ratanachu-Ek, MD, FRCST (Thailand) contributed to both the lecture and hands-on components, providing participants with an opportunity to exchange perspectives on advanced endoscopic practice across different clinical settings.

International Exchange in Advanced Endoscopy

Prof. Thawee's involvement also reflected the broader role of MGU 15 2026 as a platform for professional and scientific exchange.

As an international faculty member, he delivered the lecture on complex biliary intervention and participated directly in the hands-on EUS and ERCP sessions.

“Scientific and clinical exchange is an important part of advancing endoscopy. Every healthcare setting may have different experiences and approaches, and sharing those experiences allows physicians to learn from one another and continue improving patient care.”

The interaction between local and international faculty provided participants with a broader perspective while maintaining a strong focus on practical clinical learning.

Strengthening Practical Learning Through MGU 15 2026

The Advanced Workshop concluded in the afternoon after the extended hands-on EUS and ERCP session, marking the completion of one of the practical components of the MGU 15 2026 program at Karsa Husada Hospital.

Through the combination of scientific lectures, case-based discussion, and direct hands-on learning, the workshop provided a structured environment for participants to deepen their understanding of advanced endoscopy and pancreatobiliary intervention.

For Kusuma Enterprise, the implementation of the Advanced Workshop forms part of its role in supporting the delivery of professional and knowledge-based events, ensuring that the program's scientific and practical components could be delivered within an integrated event framework.

The Advanced Workshop also set the tone for the broader MGU 15 2026 program: connecting scientific knowledge, practical experience, and professional exchange as part of the continuing development of gastroenterology and hepatology practice. (htw)
